new york stock market
Close to Ground Zero the financial district is marked by
the bronze bull representing New York's stock market. New York's stock
exchange building lies just round the corner from the Bull on Wall Street
and is the largest stock exchange in the world. new york financial district overview The Stock Market New York building is right in the centre of the financial district. The stock market building was originally placed at 10 Broad Street but trading expansion by 1900 determined that a much more space would be required to ensure future financial dealings. The resultant neoclassic New York Stock Exchange building was designed by George B. Post and is considered one of his greatest pieces of architecture. Three years later at a cost of $4 million the new Stock market New York city building opened at its new position 18 Broad Street. Whilst over budget it received many accolades with recent technological advances such as air conditioning (only a few buildings had introduced this system at the time) and features including the 140 by 109 feet trading floor with gilt ceiling, 30 feet square skylight, emergency hospital and massive annuncilator boards. In 1922 the 11 Wall Street building opened to extend the trading floor of the Stock Market New York. Overall a further three other trading rooms have been opened to cope with the expansion of trading in this largest financial house. Of the five trading floors it is 11 Wall Street which is perceived as the main trading floor rather than the original designed by Post. You used to be able to queue for free tickets to the walk in Visitors centre which gave access to the gallery overlooking the frantic dealings taking place on the trading floor. Unfortunately since 9/11 it has been closed to the public but still remains on many a guides list of things to do in New York. Outside you can admire the grand entrance to the original building, see the remaining marks from previous terrorist attacks to this financial institution but don't be surprised to see a preacher man condemning financial greed to the bemusement of passers by! new york stock market further information 18 Broad Street (at Wall Street), New York. |
