new york guggenheim museum
Modern art is amply represented in New York city. One of
the most celebrated collections is exhibited in a building that is as
famous as the works of art that it houses. The Guggenheim museum permanent
collection includes many famous examples of work by Kandinsky, Picasso
and Cezanne but the sweeping spiral of the building almost steals the
show from this world class collection of 20th Century art. guggenheim museum new york overview There are six Guggenheim museums around the world but perhaps the most well known of these is the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum New York. All have been developed by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation but the first to be established was the New York Guggenheim which is on 5th Avenue. The Guggenheim New York was founded in 1937 and remains one of the most well-known in Manhattans Museum mile. The Guggenheim was founded to exhibit collections by early modernists including Wassily Kandinsky (of which the museum is most well known as it holds the largest collection of Kandinsky's work) and Piablo Picasso. It wasn't until 1959 however that this collection of modernist art was housed at the existing Guggenheim museum building. The building is almost as well known as the pieces of work contained within and has been regarded as a work of art in its own right. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright (although Baroness Jilla von Rebay a close friend of Guggenheim had a large role in its final shape and colour) from the exterior it looks like a spiral of white ribbon raising above the street. This theme continues inside the building with pieces of art displayed not only in the gallery's leading off the spiraling upward walkway but on the walls of this gentle incline. Modern art lovers on a New York weekend break may prefer however to head to the world renowned Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) which is just off 5th Avenue (at 53rd Street) which probably holds the worlds greatest collection of modern art. Exemplar examples of modern artists include van Gogh's Starry Night and Dali's The Persistence of Memory. new york guggenheim museum further information Solomon
