Ground Zero New York city is a poignant reminder of the
largest terrorist attack on US soil on 9/11. Right in the heart of the
financial district it is difficult not to become emotive when visualising
the vast change to New York's skyline without the World Trade Towers. ground zero new york city overview September 11th 2001 saw the worst terrorist attack to hit the United States right in the centre of the financial district in New York. Few could fail to be moved by the horrific images of the attack as they were beamed across the world by news organizations. A loss of just under 3,000 lives in total from these terrorist attacks (the majority of which 2,749 were fatalities from the towers) and a permanant change to New York's skyline by the removal of the twin towers of the World Trade Centre serve as poinient reminders of that horrific day. The impact area from the blast of the towers collapsing became known as Ground Zero (the term represents the exact ground location of an explosion). To mark a permanent memorial to the souls lost at this attack the 16 acres of the World Trade Centre site are being currently transformed into a mixture of office buildings, the controversial 1776ft Freedom Tower as well as the widely popular World Trade Centre memorial Reflecting Absence designed by Michael Arad and Peter Walker. The latter of which includes two large recesses in the original towers footprints incorporating sheets of falling water with landscape including native trees and planting such as the White Oak. Whilst New York emerged from a state of shock from this attack it is a great testament to the city and its inhabitants that they have continued to embrase and welcome people from all nations. Construction is still ongoing at the site but many visitors visit to pay respects to the many lives that were affected by the attack on the World Trade Centre and read the poinient reminders of that day so that the site remains a powerfully emotive inclusion in New York city guides. ground zero further information World Trade Centre Memorial, Church Street (between Vesey
