One of the largest city green spaces Central Park helps to make living in the city bearable in the summer. However at all times of the year people flock to visit the 843 acres of green space on the northern part of Manhattan Island. Central park is particularly popular with boaters, joggers, skaters, runners and bikers with plenty of pathways winding through the wide expanse of lakes, rivers, greenland and beautiful trees shouting a myriad of different colours all surrounded by top hotels and des-res apartments that skirt around Central Park. Which makes New York Central Park often an essential escape from the city bustle on any trip to New York.

central park overview

In 1853 700 acres of space was designated for a great public path in New York and Central Park was born. Remaining highly natural in design the whole effect has been achieved through careful planning of hard naturalistic landscaping. In 1873 the park was officially opened, 20 years after the land had been set aside for this purpose.

Despite all this hard work New York Central Park was quick to decline with little investment and changes to lifestyles which saw parks expand requirements to include recreational purposes. The decline was brought to a halt in the mid-1930's with the then major LaGuardia and Robert Moses who was charged with cleaning up the city's parks. Within a year Moses had transformed Central Park introducing more designated recreational sites to complement the remaining preexisting landscapes.

Central Park New York city is currently divided up into four zones - North End, The Reservoir, Great Lawn and South End. The North End maintains much of the original natural landscaping with Harlem Meer, Loch, Ravine and Pool the North and East Meadows and the great hill. This section also houses the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center, Conservatory Gardens and Military fortifications. Recreational sites include the Lasker Pool & Rink as well as the North Meadow recreational centre.

The Reservoir quadrant encompasses the massive lake and its surrounding bridle path which proves most popular amongst joggers. The tennis center along with many playgrounds (such as Wild West and Safari playgrounds) are also in this section of Central Park.

The Great Lawn section of Central Park is probably the most populated area with the majority of the recreational areas, metropolitan museum of art, Delacort theatre, Belvedere Castle, Swedish cottage, Shakespeare gardens, Alice in Wonderland, Loch boathouse and Turtle pond to pull in the crowds. The great lawn itself hosts many of their outdoor opera and philharmonic performances during the summer evenings with soccer, basketball and volleyball enjoyed during the day.

The final South End quadrant which spills onto Fifth Avenue includes Strawberry Fields, Wollmank Rink (which offers more secluded skating thank the more central Rockerfeller Plaza), Sculpture Park. As well as many walks and playgrounds (such as Heckscher and Adventure playground) the wildlife centre and children's zoo this section remains particularly attractive for young children in the city.
