new york brooklyn bridge
Brooklyn Bridge is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful
bridges in the world and offers one of the most impressive views of Lower
Manhattan for pedestrians from their elevated position above the traffic.
Spanning 478 m it takes approximately 20 minutes to walk across to Brooklyn
from the start of the pedestrian walkway on Park Row. Brooklyn bridge new York city overview New York's Brooklyn Bridge was the first steel suspension bridge to be built and on completion it was the world's longest bridge spanning 1568 feet (or 478 meters) across East River. New York Brooklyn bridge is a great gothic masterpiece and was designed by John Roebling and started construction in 1869. Not long after construction started he died and the remaining construction was overseen by his son Washington Roebling. Much of the bridges longevity is due to Washington Roebling as his bridge and truss system was designed to be six times stronger than necessary which is why it stands proud testimony today where many others of its era have disappeared. Brooklyn bridge has six lanes for traffic to traverse the East River and the separate elevated walkway in the centre for pedestrians and bicycles is one of the most interesting walks for things to do in New York offering superb views of the financial district and lower Manhattan. In bygone times Brooklyn bridge has also carried horses, trolleys, trains and streetcars. In 1983 it became a National Historic Engineering Landmark.
