Shopping in New York city is an absolute must and is many a reason for a short break to New York. In fact shopping in New York for Christmas presents often explains the large increase in cheap bargain holidays to New York from the UK in late October and November.

For both range and quality New York city shopping scores highly from world famous department stores and designer boutiques to back-street shops offering cheap goods or quirky items. The vast range of food stuffs at markets and small stalls also matches range and quality. A particular favourite is the market in Grand Central Terminal as shown in the photo above where you are spoilt for choice for a wide range of basic and gourmet foodstuffs.

New York city shopping can be readily divided into areas where particular types of stores can be found. For example for cheap goods and quirky items then just visit the areas around Tribeca making your way up towards Soho, Nolita and Greenwich village. Nolita has many small shops from up and coming designers while more established designers are intertwined throughout Soho alongside more mainstream stores. Greenwich village offers small boutiques and fashion stores for diverse music lovers including stores aimed at dance or gothic and metal influenced fashion. The village also has a wide selection of leather and shoe emporiums.

When shopping in New York generally as you move uptown then the prices rise and more exclusive designer boutiques can be found. Midtown has a proliferation of department stores as well as international chain stores. Close to the Empire State building lies Macy's department store which is the largest Macy's store in the world. More on Macy's...

Fifth avenue and Madison avenue offer exclusive boutiques, jewellery stores and antique emporiums by globally recognised names such as Jimmy Choos and Tiffanys. Tiffanys made famous by Audrey Hepburn in the film Breakfast at Tiffanys is famed for their jewellery and diamonds. More on Tiffanys...

The Rockerfeller Centre in the heart of Midtown Manhattan offers a wide selection of smaller stalls such as Swarvoski crystal undercover next to the plaza which sees skaters with various skills dance around the ice rink in winter. More on the Rockerfeller Centre...

As you move up towards the Upper East side then the exclusive boutiques are intersperced with international stores such as Nike as well as more up-market deparment stores such as Bloomingdales. More on Bloomingdales...

On your next trip to New York you'll be hard pushed not to find what you were looking for. Most leave the city satisfied with their purchases, many will also have an additional suitcase or two to help carry their purchases back!
