new york zarela mexican restaurant Zarela 953 2nd Avenue (between E 50th and 51st Streets). Phone 644-6740. Though there are many ethnic New York restaurants in this diverse city the number of Mexican restaurants are relatively few and far between. Don't let that deter you as one of the best Mexican restaurants offering a wide range of traditional dishes New York Zarela is well worth the visit. Clearly popular with New Yorkers this is cosy dining with fantastic Mexican food. Service is excellent and attentive without being intrusive. Sit down and order one of their traditional tequila or margaritas whilst admiring the menu and then tuck into the quickly served complementary freshly made tortilla chips and dips. Be careful though not to gorge out on the chips & dips before the meal arrives as you'll not regret leaving space for the main course of which there is an ample selection of traditional dishes as well instead of the standard burritos and chimichangas served elsewhere. The décor in Zarela New York gives a taste of the Mexican fiestas with brightly colourful masks and garlands madly decorate the wall contrasting with the subdued lighting. You may need to fight past the crowded bar to enter the seating area but the locals really make you feel welcome in this highly rated restaurant. During happy hour then complementary tortilla chips and dips are served at the food if you want a cheap nibble to tide you over. Booking recommended for the restaurant unless you are a party of two where they will try and squeeze you in. If Mexican food isn't your thing but in the same area try Boi restaurant on 44th Street for traditional Vietnamese food or Palm Too 840 2nd Avenue a traditional steak house. |
